Hey there: Are you a wanna- be gardener, but have no yard, or place to cultivate a garden/vegi garden ,or exercise that passion? Well look no further, then to our very own Community Garden here in" Happy Willits," located next to the Recreation Grove; (adjacent to the Social Service Dept.) A Non Profit Project. With once a year fee (like renting a plot) grow whatever you want, but must commit for a year, no abandoning it. Serious gardeners welcomed. There's limited spaces-sign ups begin in March. Come join us for this SENSE-ational camp where your child will have the opportunity to deepen their connection to nature through their senses each day. Through the lenses of their senses we will explore and discover more about the wild beauty found along the Mendocino Coast. Weekly sessions are: June 23rd-27th, July 7th-11th, July 21st-25th, July 28th-August 1st and August 4th-8th. Camp happens daily, Monday-Friday from 10AM-3PM. Partners Gallery is featuring mixed media paintings by Mina Cohen in June with a series entitled Palimpsest. Palimpsest means something reused or altered but bearing visible traces of its earlier form. This work comes out of desire to revise older works, most of which are very large and break them down into smaller units. Mina has reworked the individual pieces into new works that are unique smaller works.

The work is based on a very large encaustic painting from the late 1970’s, a time that encaustic painting, an ancient painting technique, was having its revival. The underlying original media and color comes through in the new work in a subtle way. Mina’s current interest in texture and pattern gives these new works a three dimensional quality.

The show opens June 12 and continues through July 7.
There is a Second Saturday Meet the Artists June 14, 5-7pm.
Gallery hours are Thursday through Monday 11-5pm.

'Playing With Perception' is an exhibition of mind-bending optical illusion paintings by local artist Richard Weiss here at Highlight Gallery in Mendocino. Henry Matisse has said: “We should always see life as we did in childhood.” Adhering plainly to this statement, Richard says, "I enjoy creating interactive mind bending optical illusion paintings. The work is in relief but is painted to appear like a conventional flat picture. Movements of the observer result in fluid distortions of the pictorial image, engaging viewers into a playful participation. The goal of my work is to infuse whimsical happiness to viewers by surprising and engaging them into a playful participation, allowing them to create their own unique experience of the optical illusion."

It’s going to be a hoppy summer thanks to the Kelley House Museum’s new exhibit on Mendocino’s beer brewing heritage. On Tap traces the deep roots and rich stories behind one of Northern California’s most spirited industries—from the small breweries that served the local lumber workers to the craft beer renaissance that put Mendocino on the national brewing map. Kelley House members are invited to an opening reception on Saturday, June 7th, 4:00pm – 5:30pm.

The exhibit showcases the evidence left behind by the 19th century breweries through archival photographs, newspaper clippings, and maps, while spotlighting the people—German immigrants, local entrepreneurs, and counterculture trailblazers—who turned hops and barley into a beverage that has sustained the community for almost two centuries. Well, except for those Prohibition years, but even then the beer makers and consumers could not be thwarted! (You’ll have to visit the exhibit to discover what a “blind pig” was.) Learn how the region’s natural abundance, independent spirit, and love of experimentation gave rise to groundbreaking breweries like the North Coast Brewing Company, one of the pioneer craft beer makers in the United States. We are pleased to host an exhibition of beautiful pastel paintings by artist Judy Magoon during the month of July at Highlight Gallery! Judy prefers to work with pastels to render her Northern California landscapes. They allow her to produce the softness and brilliance of watercolors as well as the strength and intensity of oils. She believes that artists have no choice but to find a vehicle of expression for their creative energy. We are located at 10480 Kasten Street in Mendocino and are open 11am to 4pm everyday. We hope you can find time to come by and take in all of her wonderful artwork! See you soon!
